Summer in Cornwall is in full-swing this week reminding us of Winter getaways to the Canaries and Portugal, just missing the tapas and siestas. Photos by O.B and Matt Lowe.
KOOK is a 24-page Independent Surfing Newspaper edited by Dan Crocket and this latest issue has over 90 contributors worldwide. you can lay your hands on a copy here.
We just received issue 3 of Point Never from Jim Newitt. Jim is a Devon lad, now based in Santa Cruz CA, he curates this neat little zine with contributions from hand picked artists that operate from the fringes of surf culture… If you need assurance that he's qualified to comment here's a few pics of him in the hook at his local.
Point Never 3 is available to purchase here - www.point-never.com
We're in the process of rolling out a brand refresh for Lavigne Lonsdale, in addition we've just completed a fun little colab with them, decorating one of their cardboard chairs.
Issue 39 of Casa, from 1966.
The Cornwall Design Season is a 9 week festival of Cornish creativity and ingenuity, featuring a multi-site exhibition at 15 locations across Cornwall. We're rolling out the brand materials over the coming weeks...

Another issue of Casa, issue 97 from 1976, the year i was born, it's holding up better than i am.
Just a simple tribute to one of our design heroes this week. Been fans since the Grand Royal days.
Growing up in a small coastal village with little more than a gnarled granite curb to skate we used to beg, borrow or steal to make the weekly pilgrimage to Holywell Bay, this was as close to the the Californian dream as you could get back then. Bonds were formed here with people who are still close friends 20 years on.
The big bowl was seriously challenging and I personally witnessed it reduce grown men to tears. Judging by the hardware the first two shots are circa mid 80's. The dual Power Pivot tail blocks on the last shot suggests it's late 70's which makes it even more impressive.
R.I.P Holywell Bay.
Whilst traveling in Central America a few years ago I picked up a stack of political journals from a market, the vendor couldn't understand why anyone would want to part with a dollar for a bunch of tatty magazines.
They date from '66 - '76. The covers are screen printed and they are full of bizarre illustrations and hand set text. I can't imaging how long it would have taken to put one of these together, each issue is a hand crafted masterpiece, I'll post more soon.
Some more shots from Lisbon - '97, including some stencil art. Who is Ribeiro Santos anyway? Google suggests he's a defensive midfielder for 'Sport Lisboa e Benfica' in the Portuguese first division.
Following on nicely from the last post, this is Aaron Draplin telling a story about a sign. He's a graphic designer and very passionate about what he does. Strong language - mostly lots of F words. It would be interesting to know how many of those signs are still hanging in Lisbon.
Back in '97 I found myself wandering around Lisbon with camera in hand. Being a fresh faced type obsessive I spent the afternoon snapping signage. I'll post some more soon.
Just chanced upon these beautifully executed skate themed watercolours by Texan Christopher St. Leger, plenty more here.
Los Logos Compass has just landed on our desk and features a bunch of our identity work from the last year or so. It has a larger format than its predecessors and more text features, the focus of this book has been further sharpened from a comprehensive documentation to a competent classification of prevailing tendencies in design. More info here.
If you're interested in the evolution of the visual culture surrounding skateboarding spend 10 minutes digesting ebay watch on skate and annoy. Whatever your view on vintage skateboard collecting $400 for a 1983 Gelfand sticker seems a little steep in these times.
The graphic pictured is by the legendary Ron Cameron for Blockhead.
John's got a new website, his lo-fi photos speak for themselves but the real gold is seeing them come to life in his super8 film Across the Sea Sideways.
Just came across this studio snapshot from 2006 (I think). A testament to simpler times.
Our friend Chester Al collects vintage British surfboards and related memorabilia, his collection has been unearthed from skips, hustled from carboots and pulled out of hedgerows over the course of a decade. He's been documenting his finds and sharing his knowledge on his blog for a while now, it makes for an interesting read and showcases an unexpected visual history of British surf culture.
This short film by Mickey Smith is well worth a watch.
Mickey provided the cover shot for the Book of Surfing and took this epic shot for the September Project back in 2006.
